Newton Co., IN Biography Newton County, Washington Township. From A History of Warren, Benton, Jasper and Newton Counties, 1883. PIERCE ARCHIBALD, son of James Archibald, and Sallie (Johnson) Archibald, was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana April 3, 2853. When a little child, he came with his parents to Washington Township, Newton County, Indiana, where he attended school about three months in a year, and worked the rest of the time on the farm. He went to Battle Ground Collegiate Institute one term, after which he was granted a teacher's certificate. He also attended Eureka College Illinois, on year, after which he taught ten terms of school. On September 8, 1878, he was married to Hattie J. Graves, daughter of William and Harriet E. (Stretch) Graves. They have had three children--Lora J., James A., and William P.
