Newton Co., IN Biography MARTHA V. BLANEY, 76, of Morocco died at the Community Hospital, Munster on August 3, 1999. Martha V. Spradling was born March 19, 1923, in South Bend to William and Virginia (Kessler) Spradling at Epworth Hospital. Her grandparents were Mortimer and Emily Jane (Smith) Spradling of Bellevue, Texas and Elbert Riley and Emma (Hogan) Kessler of Morocco. She was one of the first women to attend St. Joseph College, Rensselaer. She also attended Indiana University for three years. She married Clay Blaney on October 20, 1944. She managed her family's store, Spradlings, for many years, retiring in 1990. Martha and Clay purchased the store in 1964. She was very active in the community and in her church. She loved to play bridge. Martha taught first grade at Morocco Elementary School for five years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women's Group, Daughters of the American Revolution, Projects Unlimited, the historic Owl Club, Morocco Literary Club and the Newton County Historical Society. She was a lifetime member of the Hazelden Country Club and Bridge Club. During her college years she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Survivors include her husband of Morocco; a son, Daniel C. (Donna) Blaney, Morocco; a daughter Mary Sue (Dr. James) Blakely, Dallas Texas; a sister, Mary Fowler, Odessa, Texas; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Virginia Spradling. Funeral services were held at 2: p.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church, Morocco, with the Reverend Tim Powers officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Morocco.
