May the names listed here be remembered and preserved for the dedication these people showed toward their fellow men. I am basically pulling names from wherever I can find from my father's, grandfather's or great Uncle's old papers (so you'll see the Huish name mentioned a lot) or other sources. Hopefully one of you out there will learn more about your ancestors contributions to their community instead of just having a name in a family tree file somewhere. American Legion A little history: The reason for it's organization- "to preserve the memories, incidents and comradeship of that experience.... Second, to care for the needs of ex-servicemen, to look after and provide for the injured "buddy", and the widow and children of the deceased comrade. Third that the lessons of loyalty, obedience, patriotism and service learned in the hard school of war might be effectually taught to the youth of our land." "The Legion Boys of Lake County have been in the front in the Legion organization and service. Four Lake County men, Col. Thomas Hamilton and Capt. T.J. Riley of Gary Memorial Post 17, and John Scott and Charles Titus of Glen Park Post 214, attended the Paris Caucus in 1919 when the Legion was first visioned." The first Legion post was organized in Crown Point in April 1919, before the state got it's charter from the National Headquarters. They named the post Fred Schmidt in honor of the first Lake County boy to lose his life in the War. First District Commanders 1932-1935 C.
