Lake County, Indiana Gary Post Tribune 1 May 1969 Ella Combs dies; Widow of Builder Mrs. Ella M. Combs, 86, wife of the late Leslie I. Combs Sr., Gary pioneer builder and developer, died Thursday night at Methodist Hospital. A Gary resident since 1908, Mrs. Combs lived at 2508 W 5th Avenue. She was born in Vermont and after her marriage in 1903, Mrs. Combs and her husband moved to Cayuga, Indiana. There Combs manufactured building brick. It was that business that prompted the couple to move to the new city of Gary, where Combs opened a brick supply firm in 1908. In 1917 Combs organized the construction-realty firm that has continued to the present, with management now passed on to the Combses' sons, Leslie Jr. and Allen. Mrs. Combs was a member of City Methodist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors are her sons, Allen E and Leslie I., both of Gary; daughter, Mrs. Frank M. Davis of Gary, brother, Harry Draper of Vermont; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Friends may call at Burns Memorial Chapel, 7th and Adams, from 4 to 9 tonight. Private family services will be conducted Saturday morning with burial to follow in Ridge Lawn Cemetery.
