Hack Cemetery
St. John Twp., Lake Co. IN

This cemetery is a family one located on the south side of the old Crown Point road on a knoll in the field just west of the Monon Railroad and east of the town of St. John. A cinder path is around the one time rectangular cemetery. An arch facing north was evidentally the entrance to the burial ground. A few yards north of the arch is a native boulder with a bronze plate with the inscription "Catholic Cemetery Erected Here 1839". Cemetery itself is approximately 40 X 40.

GARD, Angela Hack; wife of Peter Gard; Oct. 10, 1810; Feb. 6, 1890
    - Peter; Apr. 26, 1806; Oct. 8, 1881

HACK, Allen; son of P. and H. Hack; died Apr. 13, 1860; aged 5 mos. 15 da.
    - Helen; wife of Peter; died Apr 27, 1861; aged 26 yrs, 4 mos. 28 da.
    - Johanna H.; wife of John Hack; died Aug 2, 1853; aged 66 yrs; also a footstone
    - John; Nov. 18, 1788; Nov. 21, 1856; aged 68 yrs. 6 mos.; additional information on the stone states that John Hack was the first German Settler in Lake County, locating at St. John on Sept. 17, 1837.
    - Peter; son of P. and H. Hack; died Oct. 20, 1859; aged 8 yrs. 11 mos. 84 da. (84 days?? Don't know if thats correct!)

OSWEILER, Mary Gard; wife of John B. Osweiler; died Dec. 17, 1881; aged 28 yrs. 8 mos., 27 da.

Other information on this family:
John Hack- from Hanover, Wurtemburg Germany. Born in 1787 in a Rhine province that passed from possession of France to Prussia. Settled with a large family in 1837 on the western part of Prairie West. Died in 1856. Two of his sons were residents of Crown Point. One, M. Hack, kept the hotel and died before 1873. The other, J. Hack, carried on a blacksmith and wagon shop.
