Newton Co, IN Biography Newton County, Jackson Township. From A History of Warren, Benton, Jasper & Newton Counties, 1883. RANSOM ELIJAH is a native of Saratoga County, New York, and born February 3, 1835. His parents were Lewis and Sarah Elijah, the former a native of Delaware, and the latter of Vermont. They were married in New York, whence, in 1835, they moved to Newton (then Jasper) County, Indiana, where they remained and died--she in 1852 and he in 1856. They were pioneers of the county and parents of ten children--Morgan, Sarah A., Franklin, Aaron, Harriet, Louisa, Vermelia, Ransom, James and Hiram. Our subject, Ransom Elijah, came with his parents to Newton County, where, January 25, 1859, he married Mary J., daughter of William F., and Polly Williams, and born March 4, 1841. In 1864, Mr. Elijah went to Montana, where he engaged in mining, but returned to this county in 1866, where he has since remained, and now owns 640 acres of land.
