NICKOLAS BECHER is a native of Germany, and is a son of Conrad and Margaret Becher, likewise natives of Germany. His father was a farmer and weaver, and died in Lake County, Indiana, in 1867. Nicholas Becher was twenty-two years of age when he arrived in America. He came to Lake County, Indiana and purchased forty-seven acres, which he afterward sold and then purchased eighty acres of his present home, to which he has since added eighty more. In 1870, he married Miss Mary Geier, a native of Germany, who departed from life in 1877. His second marriage, in Newton County, Indiana, was to Miss Dora Oehring, a native of Chicago. Mr. Becher is the parent of four children; by his first wife, Annie, Minnie and Dora; by his second wife, Bettie. Mr. Becher is the owner of a very fine prairie farm, with improvements, among which are one and a half miles of hedge. He averages from 2,000 to 2,500 bushels of corn, 300 to 400 bushels of oats, and from fifteen to thirty tons of hay each year.
