LAKE COUNTY DEATHS 1906/1907

1906
Mrs. M. Pierce, wife of Mycil Pierce, daughter of Abram Muzzall, of Turkey Creek, died Sept 11, 1906.

Frederick Perry died Dec. 3, 1906, born 1821, age 85 years. Children living 5, grandchildren 27. Mrs. Perry, who was his very faithful wife, still lives.

Cyrus Chapman died at his home Oct. 2, 1906. He was born in Ohio in the summer of 1827. Age 79 years and 4 months. Lived in Lake County for 60 years.

Rodman H. Wells died unexpectedly of paralysis on Thursday Oct 11, 1906. He was the older son of the pioneer Henry Wells. Captain Wells was born June 9, 1838, was a soldier and officer in the Union army and was 68 years of age.

Walter Bowes died Wed. Nov 28, 1906. He was born Feb 1849 in Chicago; married January 1881 to Arvella Irish and a resident of Crown Point for 25 years.

Mrs. Mary Hackley Clark, wife of W.A. Clark, died Dec. 21, 1906. She was born in Ritchfield N.Y. May 3, 1819 and came to Lake County around 1840.

Mrs. Jennie S. Rowins, daughter of Mr. J.S. Holton, died in Los Angeles Nov. 12, 1906. She was born in Crown Point June 25, 1855. The body was brought to Crown Point for buriel, the casket covered with beautiful flowers of the West.

1907

Mrs. Mary A. Allman, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. McMahan, Thursday Feb 7, 1907. She was born in Chazy, N.Y. Oct. 18, 1832. She was an active and prominent member of the Old Settler and Historical Association.

Ora C. Serjeant died May 1, 1907 at the home of her father's in Lowell. Nearly 32 years old, a good teacher.

Isaac B. Pierce died in Santa Barbara California January 1907 age 81.
Wheeler W. Pierce died in Santa Barbara California March 15, 1907, just a few weeks after the passing of his brother Isaac.

Mrs. M.F. Pierce was killed by the cars this morning, Nov. 9, 1907, at Merrillville.

Mrs. Emily Wells of the Vanhouten family passed away at Crown Point Feb. 15, 1907. The widow of the late Captain R.H. Wells, was born in Steuben County, New York, August 29, 1843.

Mrs. Martha M. Coffey died in Merrillville Feb 16, 1907 at age 83. Lived many years on a farm in Winfield twp but after the passing of her husband, resided with her daughter in the village of Merrillville.

Lyman Farley died at Manteno ILL. Tuesday May 21, 1907. He left kindred at Lowell and Crown Point.

Clint Dutton died some time in May 1907. The father of the late Mrs. Charles Merrill, departed this life at his home in Cogad, Nebraska at about age 80. He was a very worthy man.

Mrs. Wesley Pattee passed away at her home Thursday, June 13, 1907 at age 70 years and 4 months.

Mrs. Margaret Smith died in Crown Point August 10, 1907. She was born in Maidstone County, of Kent England Feb. 6, 1818. She was the mother-in-law of Mr. C.S. Coneway.

William Brown died Saturday June 8, 1907. Born Dec. 5, 1821, having resided many years on his prairie farm near South East Grove, and for the last few years at Crown Point.

"Another death by accident, or what is called accident, took place at the Fair Ground Lake on Sat. June 15, 1907 at 3pm. Several Crown Point boys, as is their custom in the summer time, were bathing and swimming in the lake-it is supposed that all Crown Point boys over the age of 14 can swim-when one of them, Walter Brown, son of W.B. Brown, undertaking to swim from a raft to the shore, suddenly threw up his hands and went down. Not till about 6:30 pm was the body recovered. Walter was an only son, 16 years of age."

Julia Watkins Brass died of pnuemonia April 13, 1907 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S.W. Briggs, having lived for more than 85 years. She was the grandmother of Dr. A.L. Salisbury and resided for many years in Crown Point.

Peter Phillips, of Ross twp., died Monday March 11, 1907, after residence here of sixty years. He was born March 24, 1833, in N.Y. and was married here to Rachel A. Butler Dec. 20, 1857. Ten grandchildren are living. In thirteen more days he would've been 74 years of age.

Abel Sherman born in Canada Nov. 15, 1832, died Tuesday night, August 20, 1907 at his home in Crown Point, where he spent a long, an active and a useful life.

Mrs. Marion Bliss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brown of Crown Point, died at her home near Amboy, Ind., August 21, 1907.

James Brannon died Sunday morning, Sept. 1, 1907 at age 75.

Fred Herlitz of pioneer descent, died Sept 18, 1907. He was never married, himself a pioneer boy and of excellent character.

Mrs. Carl died Nov. 31, 1907 at age 93 years.

1908

Henry R. Kolb, whose wife was Polly F. Graves youngest daughter of Orrin W. Graves and Achsah Farley Graves, died January 10, 1908.

Mr. John Millikan one of our oldest citizens, died January 18, 1908. He was born July 16, 1814 and was age 93. He was editor of the Crown Point Register for many years who lived in South Bend in 1837 and came to Crown Point in 1877. One of his great characteristics was meekness.

Mr. Janna S. Holton, who was born Dec 17, 1822, died Saturday January 25, 1908. He came to Crown Point in 1844 and was the last of Crown Points earliest merchants. He was the son of Volney Holton and the body was brought to Crown Point Cemetery for burial. Mr. Holton leaves three daughters, thirteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Harold Woods, only son of Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Woods died of typhoid pneumonia at Columbus Ohio February 11, 1908. He was attending school at the University there.

Mr. Frank Fuller was killed by the cars at Cedar Lake on the morning of Feb. 12, 1908.

Mrs. Phoebe A. Brooks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nehemiah Hayden, born in Ohio May 15, 1827, died Feb. 21, 1908. She came as a child ten years of age into Lake County, in 1837, with her parents.

Ozias W. Clark, born in Naples, N.Y. Dec 11, 1831, and came to Lake County as a child in 1837, died Feb. 23, 1908. He was never married.

Mr. Almon Wilkinson died in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Fry, Sunday March 8, 1908. He was born in Monroe County, N.Y. April 4, 1820.

Dr. Groman of Brunswick died March 8, 1908. He was 84 years old.

Mr. Noah Bibler died April 3, 1908. He was nearly 84 years of age and had been married 62 years. Citizen of Lake County for 55 years.

Mrs. Abel Farwell died at the home of her daughter in St. Joe Mich. April 8, 1908. She was formerly Louisa Burns and came to Hanover Twp in 1836. She was born in the state of NY Dec. 23, 1825. Burial at Lowell April 10.

Mrs. Alfred Edgerton, widow of a pioneer of 1836, died April 12, 1908. She was Jane H. Scritchfield, a member of one of Lake County's very large families. She leaves five brothers, five sisters, nine children, twenty- eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was about 70 years of age.

Mr. Isaac Bryant died at Hebron on Wed. April 15, 1908. He was a long resident at Plum Grove, or near it. He was about 68 years of age.

Frank Mann of Crown Point died April 15, 1908, age 80 years.

Mr. Moses M. Esty passed away at the family home April 22, 1908. Nearly 78 years of age.

Mrs. Joseph A. Clark, still in middle age, died May 19, 1908. A great loss.

Miss Lucinda Van Valkenburg died at age 90 years, on May 20, 1908.

Mrs. William Nicholson, formerly Annie Brown, died suddenly of paralysis June 17, 1908. Age 61 years.
