Subj: 1836 Settlers, Lake County Date: 98-07-04 17:25:41 EDT From: brookie@pacific.net (Brooke Gentile) To: anolelady@aol.com Hello,,,,, I am a descendant of one of the early settlers in Lake County, and I am wondering if there is anyone who can help me with the "missing pieces" of his life. His name was Daniel O. May from Barton, Vermont, who came there in 1836 and helped build two bridges. He bought land in 1838. I know of two children who were born there, William May, approx. 1838, and Ellen May, approx. 1842. I have no idea who his wife was, however she must have died there after 1842. He married next in 1850, Marshall County, Illinois, an Elizabeth Emeline Gavitt and they had one child I know of, Charles H. May, born 1855 in Berlin, Green Lake Co., Wisconsin. She also must have died as Charles is back in Vermont in 1860 living with a family by the name of Drew, and Ellen married in Vt. in 1862. I cannot find Daniel or William in 1860 but Daniel is in Vt. in 1870. I didn't find Ellen in 1860 either, but do have her marriage record in 1862. I would dearly love to find who his first wife was, and I have reason to believe he may have had other children who died in Crown Point as well as his first wife. I had a researcher do some checking for me, but did not have much luck. I am sure his wife and child(ren) are buried there, but I do not have the name of the cemetery. I presume back then there might have been only one cemetery. Any suggestions? Also, I do not know what became of William May and would love to trace him. However, one cannot put the name of May into computer programs without getting hundreds of responses because they list the month of May, the word "he may", etc. Anyhow, I was really pleased to see Daniel May's name listed on the list of pioneers and would like to be able to contribute as much as I can about him. Thanks very much. brookie@pacific.net
