Lake County, Indiana Gary Post Tribune obit 12 June 1969 Allen Combs, Retired Area Contractor, Dies Allen E. Combs, 63, who had resided most of his life in Gary, was found dead Thursday in his retirement home at Bradenton, Florida. He apparently had suffered a heart attack while dressing to go to Bradenton Airport to meet his wife, Margaret, who was returning from a visit to Gary. Combs was president of the building and construction firm of L.I. Combs and Sons until his retirement last fall. A native of Cayuga, Indiana, Combs was brought to Gary by his parents in 1908. He was a graduate of Emerson High School and attended Purdue University before entering the family business. Combs was the first president of the Gary Board of Zoning Appeals when it was founded in 1948, and served two terms. He also was a past president of the Gary Library Board, a member of City Methodist Church, Gary Lodge, F & AM, and Gary Rotary Club. He was active in Republican politics and had made a study of political campaign techniques, but had never held an elective office. Survivors besides the wife are three sons, Allen Jr., Robert B., and Thomas D.; a brother Leslie I.; a sister, Mrs. Frank M. Davis, and nine grandchildren. All reside in the Gary area.
