Newton Co., IN Biography Newton County, Washington Township. From A History of Warren, Benton, Jasper & Newton Counties, 1883. JOHN PADGETT was born May 19, 1825, in Washington County, Indiana, his father, Nathan Padgett, having moved there in 1817 from North Carolina. He attended school in a pioneer schoolhouse some of the time, also assisted on the farm and in his father's saw mill until the war with Mexico, when he enlisted in Company H, First Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on account of sickness, and returned to his father's, where, September 9, 1849, he married Mary M. Bower. About two years after his father's death, which occurred in 1850, he came to Washington Township, purchased 160 acres of prairie, which he improved, making a comfortable home. They have had nine children-- Sarah E. (deceased), John G., Elizabeth, Mary A., Michael J., James A., Rachel C., Ida and Clara. He had also an adopted son, John C. Sarver, who served in an Indiana regiment (being wounded twice) in the late war.
