Ok lets test this! I have a cousin Philip Plummer jr., he's always been "cousin" Phil yet my mom was an only child, and he wasnt my grandfathers brother. Phils grandfather, William, and my great-grandfather, Sylvester, were brothers...making our common ancestor their father Thomas Plummer. Time to test now that we've found out who came from where.

Turns out that "cousin Phil" is actually "2nd cousin twice removed Phil". But I think I'll still call him just cousin Phil.

If you, like many other people, are wondering where the removed part comes from or what it means, think of it like this:
1st generation-Thomas Plummer (the ancestor we have in common)
2nd generation-William and Sylvester Plummer
3rd generation-John and Phil Sr. Plummer
4th generation-Marge and Phil Jr
5th generation-Kathy
I am one generation off! Hence, once removed. So, Phil's son Bob was my 3rd cousin because our generations would match coming down from the top, or common ancestor...get it??
