Bernhard Paulus-Obituary Bernhard/Barnhardt Paulus was born in Bavaria June 30, 1828, died October 23, 1918, aged 90 years, 3 months and 23 days. He spent his boyhood in his native country, serving more than three years in the Bavarian Infantry. He came to America in September 1853. On New Year's Day 1854 he was married to Margaret Newbard (Neibert) at Cincinnati, Ohio. To this union were born seven children, Margaret Hand, who died September 13, 1914, Phillip and Henry of Rensselaer, Johanna Getting of Hartford Michigan, John of Peotone, Illinois, Mary Stewart of Mason City, Tennessee, Emma Van Dorn of Harvey,ILL. They lived in Ohio for seven years and then moved to a farm southeast of Brook where Mrs. Paulus died February 26, 1883. He was again married to Mrs. Irena Hines who has been his companion for thirty-five years. He leaves to mourn his loss, the widow, six children, twenty-nine grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren, two step daughters, Mrs. R.S. Bohannon and Mrs. Annie Davis of Kniman, IN. and their eleven children and seven grandchildren. He has lived in Iroquois Township for the past fifty-seven years, the last seventeen being spent in Brook. He was a member of the U.B. church of Brook and counted every man, woman and child as his friend. Those who attended the funeral from away were, John Paulus of Peotone, ILL., Phillip and Henry of Rensselaer, Mrs. Henry Getting of Hartford, Michigan, Mrs. Emma Van Dorn of Harvey ILL., and Mrs. Edward Wilson of Kentland. Many old friends from various places also attended the services which were conducted by Rev. Sickafoose, at the home, on Friday at 10:30 a.m. The ladies Quartette of the U.B.Church assisted at the services. The Interment was at Brook Cemetery. NOTE: The body was later moved to the Goodland Cemetery beside his firstwife Margaret. The tombstone inscription reads: 1828-1918
